2030 and beyond: The pathway to a sustainable utility

Building a decarbonised, diverse, and inclusive sector

Utilities are essential to the UK’s energy transition and net-zero goals, impacting both environmental and social change. Beyond maintaining and building critical infrastructure, utilities must also look at their equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) commitments amid a critical skills shortage.

In association with Utility Week, this report highlights tangible steps utilities are taking to fulfil their EDI and sustainability commitments, and recommends areas of attention for the sector to address.

Drivers of change

Based on insights drawn from the combination of interviews and our own experiences working closely with utilities, we have outlined a set of actionable recommendations designed for utilities, the government and regulators to move the sector forward.

They focus on what we see as some of the highest-priority areas; those with the most potential to deliver the most immediate impact on the journey toward sustainability and decarbonisation. These categories we cover include:

  1. Supply chains and sustainable construction materials
  2. Land, water and energy regional planning
  3. Fleet decarbonisation
  4. Chemicals and pollutants
  5. SF6
  6. Skills, resources and strengths.

Decarbonisation, sustainability and EDI efforts need to be viewed as drivers of sustainable growth. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it represents some of the most critical categories where action could be taken and where reform is not already underway.
