Swedish food security and the importance of dairy

Drought, trade disruptions, war, the sharp rise in inflation, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change have all lifted food preparedness up the Swedish political agenda.

PA was commissioned by Arla Foods Sweden to draw up a knowledge whitepaper on the role of milk in Swedish food preparedness.

The report focuses on the role of dairy and dairy products in the food chain, explores the biggest risks and vulnerabilities, and what factors contribute to the robustness of the industry. It looks at how milk is one of the few foods that, in Sweden’s climate, can be produced throughout the country, all year round, and which provides a high level of nutrition at a low cost. And how it can help address two challenges: to produce more Swedish food, and accelerate the green transition and climate adaptation in agriculture.

Smartly managed, these challenges also provide great opportunities. With investments in increased food production and more profitable agriculture, Sweden can both strengthen the national food supply and contribute to a sustainable food system across the rest of the world.
